The first time I met Sam, the co-owner of Dulce D Leche, was when I asked her whether there was added pectin in her sorbetto. I’m allergic to cranberry pectin. I could not eat the sorbetto if it contained added pectin and the pectin was derived from cranberries. Her ability to provide an actual answer to this question meant she had my loyalty to her brand forever. I am not allergic to this food! My favorite flavors are the mango and the passionfruit.
You may be wondering at this point, What is sorbetto? It sounds kind of like sorbet?
Ok, so gelato is the Italian fancy-amazing version of American ice cream, so by definition, sorbetto is the Italian fancy-amazing version of American sorbet.
But this café is so much more than a list of adjectives. The theme is Italian-Argentinian fusion frozen desserts, pastries, cake, chocolates, coffee drinks, and tea. My favorite pastry is the brioche. It’s served with your choice of jam, and once again, I asked Sam whether the strawberry jam was made with cranberry pectin. She went into the kitchen and came back with a box of apple pectin so I could see that it was truly apple-derived and verify that I wanted to eat the jam before I actually ingested any of it.
Problem solved, now I no longer have to make my own jam – I can eat the jam at Dulce D Leche! (Literally, I was making homemade jam and canning it before I made this intense discovery. I could not make this stuff up if I tried. That’s how serious I am about eating jam and also how severe my potentially-anaphylaxis cranberry allergy is.)
It’s a mark of a truly great café that every ingredient question can be answered by the owners because first of all, the owners actually know all of this information, and second of all, nearly every last item in the bakery case is made physically in this building, in this kitchen, so it’s not so hard to find out every last detail about the ingredients before I try a new food here. Also, how legit is that, they’re actually baking pastries and cakes and making frozen desserts IN THIS BUILDING?!!!
Everything is delicious. There are no bad choices of what to order. For goodness sake, they’re making chocolate truffles in this building! How cool is that?!!!
The last item I will recommend is the alfajores cookies, which are Argentinian cookies that have taken the place in my heart previously reserved for Oreos. Comparing them to Oreos is ridiculous because they’re so much more delicious and filled with actual food ingredients, not processed pretend food, but the fact is that they are two cookies sandwiched around a filling. Since Oreos are basically flour mixed with soy, and I’m allergic to soy, I can no longer eat any store-bought sandwich cookies. Therefore, ENTER THIS SANDWICH COOKIE into my life, my heart, and my tummy. I have no idea what they’re made of. I asked, and they are not made of soy, or nuts, or anything else that my immune system has a problem with. But what they’re probably made of is flour, sugar, rainbows, and fair trade unicorn breath, right?! ;-)
If you have a stomach, a soul, and/or food allergies, you MUST check out Dulce D Leche Gelato Café in Framingham.
